Slow laptops are a common problem after a few months of regular use. There are many reasons due to which your laptop tends to execute tasks slowly. You may be having too many programs running in the background that are eating your memory, or your laptop is full of unnecessary and unused programs.
These problems are common, and their solutions also are easy. Read more to find out how to make your laptop faster.
1. Uninstall unused programs.
Laptops seldom have programs which you will never use, and perhaps don’t even know anything about them. Some programs also run background processes when you use your computer, even though you are not using them. By removing such unused programs, you can make your laptop faster. You need to open the Control Panel’s Programs and Features page and take an overview of the list of installed software. Then you can keep the ones which you need and uninstall the ones which you do not need.
2. Delete temporary files.
Temporary files accumulate much space on your laptop and can remain on the hard disk and slow your laptop. By getting rid of these files, including your internet history and cookies, you free up some space on your hard disk which helps in speeding up your PC.
To do this, open “My Computer,” and select your local drive (usually C:\). Then select the “Windows” folder and then open the folder named “Temp.” Right-click on the folder, click “View” option, choose “Details.” After doing this select all the files that are older than the current date and delete them. Then go to the Recycle Bin on your desktop and empty it.
3. Install a solid-state drive.
Hard drives are the main reason behind slow laptops, especially slow start-up. So, although you need to spend some extra money, installing a solid-state drive is a good idea.
The solid-state drive enables you to have extremely fast read times and can speed up your start-up considerably.
4. Prevent unnecessary start-ups.
This method will primarily speed up the start-up process of your laptop. To do this, click “Start” and “Run.” In “Run,” type “msconfig” and then press Enter key. You will then see the “Start-up” tab, with all the programs ticked which will load upon your computer starting up.
There is a chance this list will contain some programs you did not realize were running on your computer during start-up. You can manually deselect those which you do not want, or click “Disable All” and then select those which are essential- for example, the anti-virus software.
5. Get more RAM.
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. This is the temporary storage memory used by your laptop for different programs. Therefore, the more applications you use, the more RAM you need, and if it is not enough, your laptop will get slower. A clear pointer of insufficient RAM is that your computer will slow down every time you try and process large files, or it freezes while carrying out different actions at the same time.
To solve this problem, you can increase the RAM with an extra memory stick or buy completely new memory. For seeking guidance on what kind of RAM you need, consult an expert for making the right choice.
